BookSpring Prepares for 2009-2010 School Year!

Boy signing bookRIF Programs Manager, Leah Davies, is busy preparing for a busy 2009-2010 school year. This school year, BookSpring will facilitate RIF book distributions at 28 AISD elementary schools. Leah has spent the summer working with Traci Williams, assistant Program Manager,  to select books and create props for motivational reading activities.

Beginning the week of September 20, RIF will visit AISD elementary schools for RIF Week. Students wait in anticipation all year for RIF week when they visit the library to select a book. Volunteers and/or librarians do a read-a-loud with students. After leading the class  through a themed motivational activity, each student is then given time to look at the book choices and select a book to keep and take home. Students write their names in their new books- which is often a NO-NO and find a corner to sit and read their brand new book.

Book ownership is a fundamental tool for acquiring literacy!

Here is what one RIF librarian says about RIF Week:

“There is such general excitement during RIF week! The kids ask when their class is coming when they see me in the hall.  It seems they rush excitedly to the story kiva to see what’s happening and rush enthusiastically to the tables to get to see what books they can choose.” (Galindo librarian)

2009 Allan book distributionWe have been busy all summer working on the 2010 BookSpring Read-A-Thon and want to encourage everyone to put the Read-A-Thon on your school calendars- January 25-Feb. 5, 2010.

If your campus would prefer another two-week period for the Read-A-Thon, please contact us. We are happy to make arrangements.

In Spring 2009, students from O’Henry Middle School visited Allan Elementary and helped with a RIF book distribution.  Middle school students shared story time, helped the elementary kids select their books and write their names in their new books. Adults in the room just stood back in awe as the kids, big and little, visited and shared their books!
